Are You Going to Let Your Obstacles Win? Persevering through the toughest obstacles.

You can overcome obstacles. Even with obstacles and challenges, you can persevere. I grew up on welfare and we did not have many books in our home. In my family, we were not read to by our parents, who may not have understood the importance of reading to children. Along with other factors, this may have led to me being behind in school and attending a special education class for speech assistance. I would attend this class and listen to books being read. There was also a lovely volunteer who sat me on her lap and read to me. I got out of class for this reading time, and I loved and needed this personal attention.
When I was in grade 4, we began going to a library bookmobile in the area and I began taking books out, as many as I was allowed, and read them all within 2 days. Both my reading and writing improved dramatically, along with my speech, and I began to do well in school. My marks improved. Through reading, I learned about the world, and the possibilities that the world provided.
I did not like school as a child, or even teachers who made me do schoolwork when I wanted to play outside instead. My younger self, especially with my delayed development, would have never believed that I would one day become a teacher, teaching children how to read and write, and spending much of my life inside schools. I would have cried back then if I had known that! I would never have believed that I would one day love learning.
You can persevere through the toughest obstacles.
School was a struggle for me, at times, as it is for many students, but success can be achieved. Are you going to let your obstacles win? No! You can be a winner over circumstances. Whatever obstacles that you and your children are facing today, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Keep reaching for it and DON’T ever give up until you have reached it.
